Your First Grader Will Learn...

Meet Mrs. Sutton

Transitioning to the first grade is a big change for students, and at St. Paul’s Catholic School we make sure that transition is successful. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisition of new skills is accelerated. First graders develop fundamental work habits, appropriate social behavior, problem solving, decision-making skills and of course academic skills. I hope to make your child's first full day learning experience a fun and exciting one, and to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling.

In the first grade, there is an expanded academic focus. Not to mention, students will have their own desk and supplies, which always makes school even more fun!

In the first grade, your student will start to develop their reading skills including what it means to print their letters, word recognition, reading fluency, expanding their vocabulary and concept development, reading comprehension and literacy.

In the first grade, your student will start to expand their understanding of the English language, which includes phonics and spelling. They will focus on capitalization and punctuation, grammar, alphabetical order, compound words, contractions, phonemic awareness, basic rules of spelling and spelling correctly.

In the first grade, your student will follow the Handwriting Without Tears program that focuses on a multisensory approach to teaching writing to help develop their penmanship.

In the first grade, your student will learn social studies including what it means to be a good citizen, compare characteristics of the past to the present, basic map skills, and American symbols and holidays.

In the first grade, your student will study science including plants and animals, habitats, fossils and rocks, the solar system, natural resources, weather, forms of matter, motion and magnets.

In the first grade, your student will focus on four critical areas in math: (1) developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20; (2) developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; (3) developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units; and (4) reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes.

In the first grade, your student will start to understand the basic functions of computers including keyboarding skills and how to use Word and Excel. We also incorporate grade appropriate games and programs to strengthen computer skills.

In the first grade, building on the foundation of lessons learned in early childhood, students in the first grade come to know our Father in heaven, His Son, Jesus, and what life with Jesus looks like, giving special emphasis on God’s love and mercy.

In addition, your first grader will learn Spanish as well as participate in music and physical education classes.

Our before and after school care is available to all St. Paul’s students from 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cost is only $3.00 an hour.
