Your Second Grader Will Learn...

Meet Mrs. Fitzpatrick

We at St. Paul’s Catholic School believe that second grade is a significant year of change and awareness both academically and religiously. All our students are held to a high academic excellence, but it is in the second grade that we encourage more student independence. Second grade is a warm, encouraging environment in which students learn to acquire a sense of autonomy and a high level of personal responsibility. This is also a big year in the life of a Catholic student as they will prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion and become more aware of the sacrifices and significant role of Jesus Christ in their life.

In the second grade, your student will advance their reading skills by being introduced to genres, plots, characters, and settings.

In the second grade, your student will advance their language, phonics, and spelling by learning nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They will also learn what it means to breakdown a word by following sound and spelling rules.

In the second grade, your student will follow the Handwriting Without Tears program that focuses on a multisensory approach to teaching writing to help develop their penmanship.

In the second grade, your student will start to learn and understand ancestors and immigration, how a community is interconnected and how people rely on others for their basic needs.

In the second grade, your student will establish a better understanding of science and continue with learning how living things grow and change. Your student will be able to identify different environments and the different states of matter.

In the second grade, your student will continue to develop their addition and subtraction skills, as well as be introduced to geometry, fractions, and multiplication.

In the second grade, your student will use computer programs to create products, use games to build skills including hand and eye coordination and begin learning the proper way to type. A computer lab is available for student use.

In the second grade, building on the foundation of lessons learned in early childhood, students in the second grade come to know our Father in heaven, His Son, Jesus, and what life with Jesus looks like, giving special emphasis on God’s love and mercy. Children in the second grade prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

In addition, your second grader will learn Spanish as well as participate in music and physical education classes.

Our before and after school care is available to all St. Paul’s students from 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cost is only $3.00 an hour.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. St. Paul’s is that 'village'. It is a fun, vibrant and safe community that truly cares about parents and children alike. We have four children at St. Paul’s and each of them love it. They have wonderful friends and teachers that play an important role in their lives. The teachers are exceptional, the parents are wonderful and the kids are fabulous. We love St. Paul’s for so many reasons and we would recommend it to anyone without reservation!"
